Solar Power on Your Balcony: A Worthwhile Investment for One in Four Germans
A considerable number of Germans express interest in solar panel installations on balconies.
A quarter of Germans are open to harnessing the power of the sun on their balconies, reveals a recent survey by comparison portal Verivox. The potential for homeowners to tap into solar energy is significant, with roughly 25% expressing interest.
In March, Verivox surveyed 1007 individuals, discovering that 9% had already installed a mini solar panel. Another 17% plan to purchase a balcony power station. Yet, 21% felt they lacked space, while 15% deemed it economically infeasible. Another 19% weren't interested, and 19% remained undecided.
A balcony power station boasting an output of 800 watts could generate approximately 760 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually under optimal conditions, according to Verivox. Assuming 60% of that energy (456 kWh) is utilized, it could save around 160 euros per year, given an average kilowatt-hour price of 34.7 cents/kWh.
But what about the investment? Purchase prices for small solar panels range between 500 and 800 euros for balconies, and between 400 and 700 euros for gardens or terraces. With average electricity costs savings of 3,160 euros over 20 years, the system would pay for itself in two and a half to five years.
Some federal states offer support for the purchase of balcony solar panels. In the example calculation provided by Verivox, technology investments remain profitable even when ideal conditions aren't met. Society expert Thorsten Storck commented that balcony power stations often make sense, even with less-than-optimal sunlight or shading.
The location and orientation of your balcony significantly impact the yield of the system. South-facing balconies with angled panels and minimal shadow will produce the most solar energy, while north-facing balconies with vertical panels could generate only a third of the potential yield.
While sunlight, location, panel size, government incentives, and technological advancements play crucial roles in the success of balcony solar panels, the market and economic factors also influence their viability. As technology progresses and renewable energy policies continue to support solar systems, balcony solar power becomes increasingly relevant for both residential use and off-grid applications.
