A significant number of Germans anticipate a prosperous future for self-driving vehicles
In a recent survey conducted by Bitkom, 9 in 10 Germans see digital mobility as an opportunity, signifying a significant shift towards a more connected and technologically advanced transportation system.
The survey, which polled 1,004 Germans aged 16 and over, revealed that 64% of the population want the money from the special fund to be used for the renovation and new construction of highways. However, 56 percent want investments in the renovation and new construction of bridges to be given priority, and 58% want the promotion of new public transport offers like autonomous shared taxis.
When it comes to autonomous driving, 53% believe it will be the future standard, while 43% consider it an overhyped trend. A third of Germans believe that new Chinese automakers like Nio or Byd are ahead in the race for autonomous driving.
Germans are open to autonomous means of transport: 99% would use one or more autonomous means of transport. If corresponding offers existed, 51% could imagine using car-sharing, 48% e-scooters, and 39% mopeds.
E-scooter-sharing is used by 32% when available (14% frequently), while moped sharing is currently only used by a total of 8% (4% frequently). Car-sharing by 30% (12% frequently).
The survey also indicated that 77% expect that cooperations with tech companies will be indispensable in the international race. 78% are convinced that the German automotive industry can only compete with digital innovations.
Germans are also concerned about the environment. 71% consider digital mobility an environmentally friendly option. 24% mention better-developed bike lanes as an incentive to give up their own car, and 13% say this about a subsidy for the cost of other means of transport by the employer.
The survey results also highlighted the importance of digital traffic control. 63% want better traffic control through digital technology like smart traffic lights.
In terms of the German companies investing in autonomous vehicle technology, Siemens, Volkswagen, and Daimler stand out. Siemens, which employs over 9,000 people in research and development, is noted for its strong R&D presence in mobility solutions. Volkswagen and Daimler are known leaders in automotive innovation, investing heavily in autonomous driving research and development.
The population's wishes are clear: for Germany to take a leading role, especially in the key theme of autonomous driving, it needs future large model regions instead of many isolated individual projects.
In conclusion, the survey results indicate a strong desire for digital mobility and autonomous transport among the German population. It is clear that politics is now called upon not only to invest in asphalt and concrete, but also in the bits and bytes of digital mobility.
