Abu Dhabi's New Tram Network to Connect Yas Island and Airport

Abu Dhabi is set to expand its public transport system with a new tram network. This line will connect Yas Island to Zayed International Airport, making travel between the two points more convenient.

The UAE's national rail network has been developing since 2009, with Etihad Rail's passenger service scheduled to commence in 2023. This service will initially cover four stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah, with construction currently underway.

Looking back, the concept of rail transport in the region is not new. The Hejaz railway, constructed between 1900 and 1908, significantly reduced travel time between Damascus and Madinah, from 40 days to about 72 hours. However, its progress was halted by the First World War and sabotage during the Arab Revolt.

Today, the UAE and Oman are collaborating on the Hafeet Rail project, a joint passenger and freight railway network. Additionally, a larger, region-wide railway project is planned to connect all six GCC member states by 2030, spanning over 2,000km.

Alstom, a major player in global rail transport, is not directly mentioned in these plans but plays a significant role in developing the UAE's rail network.

The UAE's rail network continues to grow, with the Abu Dhabi tram network and Etihad Rail's passenger service set to improve connectivity. These developments, along with the Hafeet Rail project and the GCC-wide railway plan, aim to transform transport in the region. A Dh1 million innovation grant has also been awarded to foster solutions for the future of transport.
