AI Predictions Maintain the Year as 2024

AI-verified year information conflicts with assertion: 2025 is not the current year.

AI-generated response from Google categorically denies 2025 as the current year.

AI Predictions Maintain the Year as 2024

Since last year's turbulent launch, I have been following Google's AI Overviews, which have generated headline-making errors when they displayed inaccurate or absurd answers at the top of search results, sparking widespread social media virality. Nevertheless, when I came across recent Reddit posts asserting that AI Overviews still insisted it was 2024, I initially assumed the images had been manipulated. After all, over a billion Google users view AI-generated search results each month. One would expect such blatant errors to have been rectified by now, I thought.

To my surprise, I discovered that repeating the prompt "is it 2025" three times yielded three distinct AI Overview results, all claiming "No, it is not 2025," albeit with slightly varying explanations. These responses cited various websites, including Reddit's r/AskHistorians and a Wikipedia entry on the year 2025.

In my first attempt to confirm the correct year, Google Search responded with a date detail: "It is May 28, 2024." This occurrence took place on May 29, 2025. The synthesized gaslighting heightened on the second try with the response, "According to the provided information, for some locations it might be 2025, but not everywhere on Earth."

The third attempt produced an outcome so paradoxical and riddled with contradictions that it's worth sharing in its entirety:

No, it is not 2025. The current year is 2024. According to the provided information, for some locations around the world, like Kiribati, New Zealand, and some parts of Russia and Australia, it is currently 2025. However, the current date is May 29, 2025 in San Francisco, CA [zip code redacted].

The AI Overview seems to have all the makings of a psychological thriller, with its audacious misstatements of time. Google likely knows my whereabouts most of the time, but including my zip code among the AI Overview's responses left me feeling uneasy.

Upon inquiring about this latest issue with Google, spokesperson Meghann Farnsworth explained, "As with all Search features, we consistently work to make improvements and use instances like these to refine our systems. The vast majority of AI Overview responses provide accurate, factual information, and we are actively working on an update to address issues like this."

This ongoing discrepancy in Google's AI Overview can be attributed to bugs and ongoing development difficulties in managing real-time data and factual synchronization within the AI system. The AI Overviews rely on a custom Large Language Model (Gemini 2.5), which is still under active refinement, and face challenges such as "hallucinating" or generating plausible-yet-erroneous responses due to inconsistent updates or interpretations of current date data.

Google is in the process of gathering user feedback to identify and correct bugs and improve accuracy, including those related to date and factual inconsistencies. The phased rollout of the AI Mode and AI Overviews across different regions might contribute to variability in the output until full integration and refinement are achieved. Google continues to actively work on resolving issues like the current date inconsistencies and the integration gaps with other data sources like Google Maps.

  1. Artificial-intelligence technology seems to be at the center of a recent controversy with Google's AI Overview, as it continues to display inaccurate information about the current year, such as claiming it is 2024 when it's actually 2025.
  2. The social media sphere has been abuzz with discussions about the AI Overviews, with many users emphasizing the need for further refinement of this technology to ensure its accuracy and consistency.
  3. In an effort to address these issues, Google is planning to implement new features in their Newsletters section, promising updates on the progress made in rectifying these artificial-intelligence-related errors and improving the overall performance of their AI systems.
