AI Recreates Parkland Teen's Voice for Powerful Gun Control Campaign

A Florida nonprofit, Change the Ref, has launched a poignant campaign using AI to recreate a teenager killed in the Parkland school shooting. The campaign, 'Unfinished Votes', features a lifelike virtual avatar of Joaquin Oliver, urging viewers to vote for gun control-supporting politicians.

McCann Health, a global healthcare marketing agency, employed generative AI to mimic Joaquin's voice and create a CGI-like representation from a single photograph. The result is a chillingly realistic avatar that delivers a powerful message.

The campaign is a stark reminder of the unfinished business of gun violence in America. Joaquin, a 17-year-old student, was one of 17 people killed in the 2018 Parkland shooting. His parents, Manuel and Patricia Oliver, founded Change the Ref in his memory to promote gun safety and advocate for legislative change.

The 'Unfinished Votes' campaign is a haunting reminder of the lives cut short by gun violence and the power of youth activism. Change the Ref, through this innovative use of AI, ensures Joaquin's voice continues to echo, compelling viewers to vote for gun control and complete the unfinished business of gun reform.
