Kickin' it up a notch: Airbus beefs up German military aircraft with missile defense systems
Airbus supplies defensive systems for German military aircraft's security.
Straight from the horses' mouth (or in this case, Airbus), they're arming up German military planes with state-of-the-art protective systems. This badass move comes from Airbus' own production line, ideal for fending off missile attacks.
The German Armed Forces can't wait to get their hands on these babies. Airbus proudly declared that they've scored an order from the German Armed Forces for the delivery of a whopping 23 "A400M" aircraft-mounted DIRCM systems. And let's not forget, the contract also includes some extra goodies for good measure.
So, what's a DIRCM? It stands for "Directed Infrared Counter Measures," and it's there to keep those military birds in the air during a dogfight against heat-seeking missiles. Using high-tech laser shenanigans, DIRCM's aim is to mess with the guidance systems of incoming projectiles or bust them up before they get a chance to see their target.
The lucky DIRCM systems are, of course, supplied by none other than Elbit Systems. Airbus will handle the installation during routine maintenance at their facilities in Manching (Germany), Getafe (Spain), and Seville (Spain). Certification for these systems is estimated to be completed by summer 2025, with the installation process set to wrap up by 2032.
Now, that's not all! In addition to the fancy laser defense systems, the contract also includes training, service bulletins, and handy tools for hassle-free operation and maintenance.
According to reports, these DIRCM protective systems will be particularly useful for the Luftwaffe's A400M fleet in crisis areas, especially during life-saving medical evacuation missions.
So there you have it! The German Air Force is getting a set of wings that can shield them from danger during high-stakes missions. And hey, if you think about it, who doesn't want a little extra protection these days? Just ask Wile E. Coyote.

The community of German Air Force personnel can now benefit from enhanced safety and employment opportunities, as Airbus deploys DIRCM systems for their A400M aircraft. Vocational training and ongoing support services, such as service bulletins and tools for maintenance, are part of this contract, fostering a skilled workforce in technology-related fields.
For the sustainable operation of the A400M fleet in future crisis areas, vocational training in technology, employment, and operational maintenance has become indispensable, ensuring that these advanced defense systems continue to serve their purpose.
