Airbus teams up with Avincis for cutting-edge Urban Air Transport developments
Airbus and Avincis Partner to Revolutionize Urban Air Mobility in Europe
In an exciting development for the future of transportation, Airbus and Avincis have joined forces to pioneer Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) in Europe. This partnership aims to harness the synergy between Avincis' extensive experience in aerial emergency services and Airbus' aerospace technology, with the goal of seamlessly integrating electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft into Europe's urban landscapes [1][2].
With over 220 aircraft and a team of more than 2,400 professionals [3], Avincis brings a wealth of operational expertise to the table. The company boasts bases in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and operates in Mozambique and Chile [4]. A significant portion of Avincis' global fleet of around 60 aircraft are Airbus models, which play a crucial role in their operations across Europe, Africa, and South America [5].
The partnership's flagship project is the CityAirbus NextGen prototype, which underwent final assembly and power-on in December 2023 [6]. Currently, the prototype is undergoing testing at Airbus's AAM test centre in Donauwörth, Germany [7]. The CityAirbus NextGen prototype is expected to make its initial flight later this year [8]. The prototype was unveiled to the public in March 2024 [9].
The Airbus-Avincis collaboration is not just about technological innovation; it's also about fostering a sustainable and integrated transportation system. By aligning with Europe’s focus on green technologies and sustainable urban transport solutions, the partnership aims to contribute to a cleaner, more efficient urban mobility landscape [2].
The partnership's strategy includes utilising existing airports and infrastructure to reduce costs and expedite deployment. By leveraging the safety protocols, air traffic control, and regulatory frameworks already in place, the integration of eVTOL aircraft into Europe's urban environments becomes a smoother process [2].
Furthermore, the partnership seeks to accelerate operational readiness and scaling, addressing urban congestion and pollution issues by overcoming technical and regulatory challenges. This collaboration enables the efficient scaling of AAM services to meet the growing demand for urban air mobility [1][2].
In a bid to establish a viable AAM market, Avincis plans to expand its network of partnerships. The goal is to bring together stakeholders from various sectors to create a thriving AAM ecosystem [10].
In conclusion, the Airbus-Avincis partnership represents a significant step forward in the development of AAM in Europe. By integrating new air mobility solutions into existing transport ecosystems while promoting environmental sustainability and regulatory alignment, this collaboration is set to revolutionise urban mobility in Europe and beyond.
