Things kicked off back in the 1970s, when humble beginnings were laid down to include accessibility in design.Simple modifications to Atari's "Pong"-type games, like slowing down the gameplay speed, provided a stepping stone for gamers with cognitive or learning impairments to fully engage in real-time strategy at their own speed.
The 1980s brought a surge in game complexity, causing controller designs to follow suit. However, the trailblazing Nintendo bucked this trend by introducing the NES Hands Free Controller in 1988. The world's first custom-made controller specifically for players with limited mobility, it allowed users to control the game by blowing or sipping air through a straw.
