Android's latest upgrade for Android 16 introduces auto-themed app icons, with no option for apps to resist this change.

In a move reminiscent of Apple's iOS 18, Google has announced that it will require app developers to adapt their app icons to the system theme and implement a dark mode by default. This change is part of the latest beta update for Android 16 QPR2 and will specifically apply to devices Pixel 6 and newer.

The decision to enforce this change is considered necessary to improve icon theming on Android, offering users more control over the appearance of their apps. This update could lead to a more customizable Android user experience.

The new rules for existing developers will take effect on October 15, 2021, while they already went into effect for new developers on September 15, 2025. Google's updated policy allows users to modify colours or adjust themes of apps in the Developer Distribution Agreement (DDA) section 5.3, starting from the same date.

The implementation of universal icon theming was earlier, but it's only now being properly and fully enforced. This change aims to help users and developers avoid potential conflicts, such as issues with modifying a brand's icon. Google's motivation for this change is to protect itself from takedown notices from brands and developers.

This update in Google's policy could potentially attract more developers to the Android platform due to increased user customization options. With these changes, Google is taking a significant step towards creating a more unified and customizable Android ecosystem.
