Announcement of a $30 million fund for the OP_CAT ecosystem within the Bitcoin Ordinals Project Taproot Wizards initiative
Taproot Wizards, a community group and developer collective, has announced a significant funding round of $30 million. This investment will be used to drive the development of applications comparable to those found on Solana and Ethereum, on Bitcoin, using the OP_CAT functionality.
The funds will be allocated for both in-house development and to help build the OP_CAT ecosystem outside of the company. This funding round follows Taproot Wizards' previous $7.5 million seed round announced in November 2023.
OP_CAT, also known as OPcode Concatenate or OP_CONCAT, is a simple scripting tool for Bitcoin that enables automated and customizable transactions. Originally enabled on Bitcoin by its founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, the OP_CAT functionality was later disabled due to a lack of use cases. However, Taproot Wizards is working to reactivate this opcode, which could significantly expand Bitcoin's programmability.
With OP_CAT, developers aim to enable more complex smart contracts on Bitcoin, similar in scope to those on Solana and Ethereum. For example, OP_CAT could facilitate trustless vaults, native decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, and improved multisignature (multisig) configurations, all without compromising Bitcoin’s core security principles.
Udi Wertheimer, one of the founders of Taproot Wizards, expects a surge in the creation of new protocols on OP_CAT, similar to the frequency seen on Ethereum and Solana. Instead of Ordinels and BRC20s, new protocols like these may emerge on OP_CAT at a rapid pace.
The funding round is led by Standard Crypto and includes participation from Cyber Fund, Collider Ventures, Geometry, Masterkey VC, and Newman Capital. Taproot Wizards' focus remains on OP_CAT as the future of Bitcoin, and they aim to use this technology to power the types of apps built on Ethereum and Solana on Bitcoin.
As Taproot Wizards continues to innovate and experiment with Bitcoin script extensions like OP_CAT, they are playing a crucial role in Bitcoin's emergence as a dApp network. The development around OP_CAT, including prototype implementations and consensus logic adjustments, is aligned with Taproot Wizards’ objective of enabling expressive smart contracts and quantum-resistant signatures on Bitcoin.
In sum, the reactivation of the OP_CAT opcode represents a cautious but impactful evolution of Bitcoin scripting. This development could pave the way for rich smart contracts and dApps on Bitcoin, similar to Ethereum and Solana ecosystems, while complementing Taproot's enhancements for complex contracts.
The $30 million funding round will be utilized for both in-house development and fostering the OP_CAT ecosystem, with a focus on creating daily news about technology-driven applications comparable to Solana and Ethereum on Bitcoin using OP_CAT. With the reactivation of OP_CAT, Taproot Wizards aims to set the stage for the creation of new protocols, fostering an ecosystem reminiscent of the frequent emergence of Ordinels and BRC20s on Ethereum and Solana.
