Anticipated Camera Launches in 2025: An Insight into Official and Unofficial Debuts!
In the ever-evolving world of photography, Canon continues to make waves as the most prolific photographic patenter for an impressive 41 consecutive years. With the camera industry buzzing with anticipation, Canon is gearing up to launch several highly-anticipated new models in 2025.
Leading the pack is the much-awaited Canon EOS R6 Mark III, expected to be announced in the first quarter of the year, around the CP+ show in Japan (Feb 27 - Mar 2). The successor to the EOS R6 Mark II, the EOS R6 Mark III is rumoured to be more of a refinement than a reinvention, with upgrades such as an improved EVF, a new dual-axis flip-out OLED touchscreen, similar continuous shooting speeds (up to 40fps), potential DIGIC Accelerator for better performance, advanced subject detection autofocus, enhanced neural network noise reduction, and improved 6K video recording possibly supporting Cinema RAW Light codec.
Following closely is the Canon PowerShot V3, a new member of Canon’s V-series compact cameras. Unlike its predecessor, the V1, which focuses on vlogging, the PowerShot V3 is aimed at photographers. It is rumoured to feature the same 1.4-inch sensor as the V1 but with a longer zoom range (around 20x) potentially reaching 500mm, making it more suitable for still photography. The PowerShot V3 might also retain a 30fps burst shooting mode.
Another exciting rumour swirling around Canon is the Canon RE-1, a mirrorless update inspired by the classic Canon AE-1 film camera. This camera is expected to be announced in 2025 with a launch in 2026 for the AE-1’s 50th anniversary. The RE-1 is expected to focus on photography more than video, likely mid-range specs similar to the EOS R6 Mark II with a 24MP sensor, and possibly featuring exclusive film simulations through partnerships like with Kodak.
While the lineup of Canon's best cameras in 2025 still includes highly regarded models such as the EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R7, EOS R50, and DSLR models like the EOS 5D Mark IV and Rebel T7, these are existing cameras rather than new releases.
Rumours also suggest that Canon is working on a camera with a global shutter sensor, a gimbal camera similar to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, featuring a fixed zoom lens instead of an interchangeable one, and a 3D VR Camera with 360° / 180° 3D VR 8K capture and VR live streaming, with a target price of under $1,000.
Meanwhile, other camera manufacturers are not resting on their laurels. Fujifilm has been particularly active, releasing the super-unconventional Fujifilm X Half and the product of the year, the Fujifilm X-E5. Sony has revealed the Sony FX2, a product of long-running camera rumors. Ricoh has unveiled the Ricoh GR IV, another product of long-standing camera rumors.
As the year unfolds, we can expect the camera industry to continue to thrive with exciting new releases from Canon and its competitors. Stay tuned for more updates!
