Apple Challenges EU's Digital Markets Act, Citing Innovation Hurdles

Apple has expressed concerns about the Digital Markets Act (DMA), a European regulation aimed at curbing the market power of large tech companies. The tech giant has requested the European Commission to review the DMA, claiming it hinders innovation and causes delays in new features for EU users.

Apple has been vocal about the challenges it faces in complying with the DMA. The company has delayed features like iPhone mirroring to Mac and live translation with AirPods due to the act's requirements. It argues that the DMA forces it to compromise user data security and privacy.

In Germany, the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) oversees DMA compliance, working alongside the European Commission. Apple is currently under investigation for DMA compliance, with upcoming oral hearings scheduled in October 2025. The company is expected to address issues such as enabling interoperability with iOS and regulating iMessage services.

Apple has also experienced delays in location-based features in Apple Maps due to DMA compliance issues. The European Commission has reiterated that gatekeepers like Apple must allow interoperability with third-party devices.

Apple's request for a DMA review comes as the company continues to explore ways to deliver new features within existing legal requirements. The EU, however, maintains its stance on ensuring fair competition and user choice, with the DMA's enforcement ongoing.
