Apple reveals commitment of $100 billion for US investments
Apple Inc., the tech giant based in Cupertino, California, has unveiled a significant new initiative aimed at boosting U.S. manufacturing. The American Manufacturing Program (AMP), launched in August 2025, marks a major step towards bringing more of Apple's supply chain and component production to the United States.
The company has committed a total of $600 billion in U.S. investments over the next four years, an increase of $100 billion announced as part of AMP. This investment is intended to expand manufacturing operations, create jobs, and fuel a domestic silicon supply chain supporting Apple products worldwide.
Key details and partnerships of AMP include:
- Scope and Jobs: AMP is designed to expand manufacturing operations across 10 states such as Arizona, California, Texas, and others, supporting over 450,000 jobs directly and indirectly. Apple plans to hire 20,000 new employees in the U.S., primarily in research and development, silicon engineering, software development, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
- Supply Chain and Partners: The program fosters collaborations with major semiconductor and technology companies to strengthen an end-to-end U.S. silicon manufacturing ecosystem. Notable partners include Corning Inc. (glass and specialty materials), Applied Materials Inc. (semiconductor manufacturing equipment), and Texas Instruments Inc. (semiconductor design and manufacturing). Other partners like GlobalWafers America, Samsung (Austin facility), GlobalFoundries, Amkor Technology, Broadcom, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) with its Arizona plant are also key parts of the supply chain expansion.
- Investment and Production Capacity: The U.S. silicon supply chain supported by AMP is projected to produce more than 19 billion chips for Apple in 2025, highlighting the scale of domestic production.
- Rare Earth Materials: In a related move complementing AMP, Apple has committed $500 million with MP Materials to source and recycle rare earth magnets domestically, also contributing to the supply chain resilience essential for advanced technology.
- Government Support: Apple’s announcement was supported by the Trump administration, emphasizing a broader policy goal to bring manufacturing jobs and technology leadership back to the U.S.
In a separate development, the president's country-specific tariffs on dozens of trading partners are set to take effect on Thursday. Apple's move to onshore manufacturing for its flagship iPhones could help the company avoid these punishing tariffs. If Cook, Apple's CEO, is able to convince Trump to exempt Apple's products from import taxes again, it could help the company avoid costs that analysts expect to erode profit margins and increase consumer prices.
Apple's shares were up 5.1% on the day of the announcement, reflecting investor optimism about the company's commitment to U.S. manufacturing. The latest pledge brings Apple's cumulative commitment to $600 billion, a significant investment in the U.S. economy and technology sector. The investment falls short of a full shift to U.S.-based production as envisioned by Trump and top White House officials, but it represents a significant step towards a more resilient and self-reliant U.S. technology supply chain.
