Apple's New AirPods Pro 3 Are Practically Unrepairable, iFixit Finds

Apple's latest AirPods Pro 3 have hit the market, but they come with a significant downside: they're practically impossible to repair. This has been confirmed by iFixit, who gave them a repairability score of zero. The AirPods Pro 3's design is the main culprit. The stem is glued together, making repairs challenging. Even removing components can lead to damage, such as torn ribbon cables and broken plastic. The case is also glued shut, adding to the repair difficulties. The battery, while relatively easy to remove, poses another challenge. Resealing the buds is a complex task, further complicating repairs. Moreover, the AirPods Pro 3 have fewer rare-earth magnets and a single battery, making them less durable than previous models. Apple's own AppleCare+ plan offers unlimited repairs and express replacement service, but this is seen as a band-aid solution. Given the non-repairable nature of the AirPods Pro 3, many see this as a step backwards in sustainability and consumer choice. Opening the AirPods Pro 3 requires heat, which can cause cosmetic damage. Their design makes them difficult to repair, with parts that may wear down over time being inaccessible. While AppleCare+ offers repair services, the non-repairable nature of the AirPods Pro 3 raises concerns about their lifespan and environmental impact.
