In a thought-provoking keynote address at the AV/IT Summit held on August 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Julian Phillips, a renowned figure in the audiovisual (AV) industry and columnist for "Blueprint for Success," challenged the industry to rethink its approach to innovation.

Phillips, who is also the managing director of XTG, the experimental technology division of AVI-SPL, emphasised the synergistic relationship between AI and AV, suggesting that the integration of artificial intelligence could drive innovation by enhancing user experiences, automating complex processes, and enabling smarter system design and deployment.

Phillips encouraged a shift in workplace percentages, suggesting that organisations should dedicate a larger share of their time and resources to exploration and innovation, rather than maintaining the status quo. He argued that most organisations currently spend about 90% of their resources on maintaining the status quo, leaving only 10% for innovation or transformation.

The keynote also touched upon the importance of human-centered AI design, emphasising the need for intuitive and effective AV solutions. Phillips highlighted how AI-driven analytics and automation could empower the industry to create more adaptive, innovative Pro AV systems.

Phillips' talk was not just about the synergy between AV and AI. He also encouraged attendees to challenge industry norms, using Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of spiritual transformation as a metaphor. He compared the process of change to the metamorphosis of a camel into a lion and then into a child, emphasising the need to question established practices and consider new ways to conduct business.

Phillips' three major takeaways from his talk included the importance of AI, the need for a shift in workplace percentages, and the encouragement to challenge industry norms. While the shift is not expected to happen overnight and may not be achievable for everyone, Phillips stressed that it is the wrong strategy for the Pro AV industry to continue maintaining the status quo.

The question remains whether people have dedicated time in their work week for considering new ideas, new opportunities, and anything new. As the AV/IT Summit comes to a close, the industry is left pondering Phillips' call to action and the potential benefits of embracing AI and innovation.
