Artificial Intelligence (AI) could potentially disrupt the labor market, particularly for women, according to a new study conducted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) of the United Nations and the Polish National Research Institute (NRI).

The report reveals that 25% of all jobs are at risk due to AI advancements, with the proportion reaching 34% in affluent countries. Strikingly, women are three times more likely than men to be affected, potentially losing their jobs to AI technology.

The increased likelihood of job loss among women is attributed to their predominance in administrative roles, as highlighted by US Census Bureau data. Between 2000 and 2019, more than 90% of secretarial and administrative positions were held by women, making them particularly susceptible to AI automation.

The report suggests that jobs calling for data processing and statistical analysis are most at risk of being replaced by AI. Positions requiring emotional skills and human creativity, however, are less likely to be impacted. The authors also emphasize the potential benefits of embracing AI, advocating for its use to streamline tasks and improve productivity.

Despite the concerns raised in the report, the use of robots in care settings has been widespread in Asia for some time. However, the study does not indicate that care jobs like childcare, elderly, or healthcare will be taken over by AI-controlled robots in the immediate future.

As the integration of AI transforms the labor landscape, it's crucial for workers to adapt by acquiring new skills and leveraging AI to improve their work. The report underscores that the effects of technological change will vary, affecting some individuals more than others.

  1. To mitigate the disproportionate impact of Artificial Intelligence on the labor market, particularly for women, community policies could be implemented to provide vocational training in areas less susceptible to AI automation, such as jobs requiring emotional skills and human creativity.
  2. There is a need for science and technology to focus on developing AI models that prioritize health-and-wellness, such as women's health, to ensure that technological advancements do not exacerbate existing gender inequalities in the workforce.
  3. As the rise of AI in the labor market continues, it may be beneficial for individuals to consider careers in fields traditionally less dominated by AI, such as art and artistic intelligence, to foster a balanced workforce that leverages both human creativity and technological advancements.
