Autonomous Shuttle Operation at Zurich Airport Achieves Level 3 Automation
Zurich Airport's autonomous shuttle bus project, a joint venture with tech company WeRide, has made significant strides, marking a first for European airports. As of March 2025, the project has been underway, with the latest development being the installation and testing of a remote cockpit at the ZRH Innovation Hub since September.
The autonomous shuttle buses are currently running between Gate 101 and Gate 130 at the airport, and the project has reached automation level 3. Hundreds of test runs and comprehensive technical testing have been performed as part of the project, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the autonomous vehicles.
The remote cockpit allows for the monitoring of vehicles going forward, paving the way for the next milestone: automation level 4. This level would eliminate safety drivers and only use remote monitoring, bringing the project one step closer to its ultimate goal of fully autonomous airport operations.
The next step in the project could potentially involve operating the buses with passengers on board. If successful, this would signify a significant milestone in the development of autonomous airport operations, demonstrating the potential for increased efficiency and reduced reliance on human operators.
The project has been a collaborative effort, with numerous departments within the company involved, including the implementation of a new IT infrastructure. The ZRH Innovation Hub remains a key location for the development and testing of the autonomous shuttle bus project.
The autonomous shuttle bus project at Zurich Airport is a testament to the airport's commitment to innovation and the future of transportation. If the project continues to progress as planned, it could revolutionise airport operations, making travel more efficient and seamless for passengers.
