Awards Announced for Best Cars, Trucks, and SUVs in North America: Winners Include Prius, F-150 Super Duty, and EV9
2024 North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the YearTM Awards Announced
The North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the YearTM awards were presented to the Toyota Prius and Prius Prime for the Car category, the Ford Super Duty for the Truck category, and the Kia EV9 for the Utility Vehicle category during a press conference at M1 Concourse in Pontiac.
The Toyota Prius and Prius Prime were praised for their stylish design, fuel efficiency, and electric drivetrain capabilities. The Prius, considered unrecognizable compared to previous models, was described as stunningly attractive by many. The Prius Prime offers more than 40 miles of pure electric range, making it an attractive option for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint.
The Ford Super Duty received 189 votes for the North American Truck of the YearTM. The truck was praised for its impressive towing, payload, torque, and horsepower figures, as well as its comfort and ease of driving. It is equipped with four engine choices, including a new standard 6.8-liter gasoline V8 and 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8.
The Kia EV9, on the other hand, offers a genuine 3-row configuration in a battery-electric SUV at a price significantly below the six-figure tab for all other 3-row electric SUVs. The EV9's design attracts attention before anyone finds out it's electric. It was seen as a threat to other mass market brands due to its upscale design and technology at prices below premium brands. The EV9 received 320 votes for the North American Utility Vehicle of the YearTM.
NACTOY, the organization responsible for these awards, is a group of 50 professional automotive journalists from various media outlets in the United States and Canada. The jury for the 2024 NACTOY award was selected by the NACTOY board of directors, composed of professional automotive journalists. The votes for the 2024 NACTOY winners were confidentially tallied by Deloitte LLP.
The awards process began in July 2023 with an initial list of 52 eligible vehicles. The list was narrowed down to 9 finalists, which were announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Kia EV9, which will be built in the U.S. within a year, was among the finalists.
The North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the YearTM awards are given by an independent jury of automotive journalists from the United States and Canada to recognize the most outstanding new vehicles of the year based on factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction, user experience, and value.
