Solar Expansion: Giffey to Focus More on Large Roofs - Berlin Aims for 25% Solar Power by 2035 with Massive Capacity Boost
Berlin's Economy Senator Franziska Giffey has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly boost the city's solar power capacity. Aiming for a 25% share by 2035, Giffey targets a whopping 4,400 megawatt-peak (4.4 GWp), a massive leap from the current 459 MWp. The strategy involves shifting focus from balcony power stations to larger installations on business rooftops and other owners.
Currently, Berlin's solar capacity meets the annual consumption of around 165,000 households. With over 53,000 installations, the city has made strides, but Giffey aims to accelerate this growth. The SolarPlus funding program, which granted around 27,000 approvals worth 26.5 million euros, will play a crucial role in this expansion. Notably, 19,000 of these approvals were for balcony power stations, indicating a shift in focus is needed to meet the new targets.
To achieve the 2035 goal, Giffey plans to concentrate on large rooftops of businesses and other owners. These spaces hold great unused potential for photovoltaic expansion. By increasing capacity through larger installations, Berlin can expect a significant boost in its solar power share.
By 2035, Berlin aims to have a 25% solar power share, up from the current 5.6%. This ambitious target requires a shift in focus from balcony power stations to larger installations. With the right strategies and investments, Berlin can harness the power of the sun to meet a significant portion of its energy needs.
