BMW M Hybrid V8 Set for Updates and North American Debut

In an exciting development for motorsport enthusiasts, BMW M Motorsport has announced updates to its M Hybrid V8 race car, slated for the 2026 season. The updates will be unveiled at the 24 Hours of Daytona in late January, marking the M Hybrid V8's entry into the North American racing scene.

The M Hybrid V8, which competes in both the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) series, will undergo significant changes. These updates, according to BMW M Motorsport, aim to make the car quick on a wide range of circuits.

Key modifications include an improved aerodynamics and cooling efficiency from the redesigned front splitter, as well as updated headlights. Photos of the redesigned race car have been released by BMW, but the new livery remains concealed under a disguise.

The test session for the updated M Hybrid V8 is scheduled after the FIA WEC 'Lone Star Le Mans' race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. This test session, a private event not open to the public, is set for September 5-7.

BMW M Motorsport is collaborating with chassis supplier Dallara for these updates. The brand's motorsport division is also in talks with the Belgian team WRT to become the long-term partner for the BMW M Hybrid V8 in North America, replacing the former 17-year partner team RLL. This partnership, expected to cover the full IMSA season starting with the 2026 24 Hours of Daytona race, is part of WRT's interest in expanding its current partnership with BMW in North America.

However, no further details about potential partners for BMW M Motorsport beyond the 2022 season have been disclosed. Meanwhile, BMW M Motorsport remains interested in working with BMW M Team RLL outside IMSA.

It's worth noting that the M Hybrid V8 is not street-legal and cannot be purchased by individuals.

The M Hybrid V8's entry into the North American racing scene follows BMW's long-term commitment to the race car, as confirmed earlier this year. With these updates and a new partnership, the M Hybrid V8 is poised to make a strong impact in the IMSA series.
