Boris FX appoints Moritz Fortmann as SynthEyes Product Manager
In a significant move for the visual effects (VFX) industry, Boris FX has appointed Moritz Fortmann as the new product manager for SynthEyes. Fortmann, a seasoned industry professional with nearly twenty years of experience, previously held product roles at Foundry, MAXON, and Blackmagic Design.
SynthEyes, a renowned 3D camera solve application, is designed to integrate digital elements with live-action footage, making it an essential part of many VFX workflows. Dr. Russ Andersson, the creator of SynthEyes, is elated to present Fortmann as a dedicated product champion.
Fortmann will be working alongside Dr. Andersson to further develop the 3D tracking and matchmove tools in SynthEyes. His understanding of Boris FX's ecosystem and eagerness to enhance SynthEyes are seen as valuable assets.
New Features and Workflows
Under Fortmann's leadership, Boris FX SynthEyes offers several new features and workflows focused on improving 3D camera tracking, match-moving, and scene management.
- Parent Mesh to Tracker Workflow: This new tool allows users to parent geometry meshes directly to solved tracking points in 3D. It automates the updating of mesh positions with each solve, saving time by eliminating manual repositioning during iterative solves, pivot adjustments, scene scaling, or changes in distortion parameters.
- AI-Powered Motion Tracking: SynthEyes 2025.5 introduces AI-driven enhancements in motion tracking capabilities to improve accuracy and speed, along with new export tools and multi-export workflows to streamline the integration of tracking data with other software like Flame, Silhouette, Blender, and After Effects.
- Scene Alignment Using Lines: A new mini-tip workflow allows users to align their scenes with straight lines corresponding to the X, Y, or Z axis. By defining two lines at the coordinate system’s center and additional parallel lines, SynthEyes can better solve and align the 3D scene, improving track accuracy and usability.
- Improved Export Systems and Roto Masking: Alongside enhanced export workflows, the software now includes AI-based roto masking and a 3D head mesh tool for head tracking, expanding its use in character tracking and rotoscoping tasks.
These updates focus on saving time on iterative solves, improving export and integration workflows, and leveraging AI to enhance tracking precision and usability across 3D tracking and VFX pipelines.
Expanded Resources for SynthEyes
Since joining the Boris FX family, SynthEyes has expanded its technical and creative resources. Boris Yamnitsky, CEO/Founder of Boris FX, is delighted to have Fortmann on board as the new SynthEyes product manager. Dr. Andersson, who has been the solo developer and expert trainer of SynthEyes for over twenty years, is looking forward to working with Fortmann to bring even more innovations to this powerful VFX tool.
