Canon's New Patent Aims to Make AR/VR Glasses as Normal as Regular Eyewear
Canon has filed a patent for a new optical system that could revolutionise Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) glasses. The patent describes a compact design that aims to make immersive AR/VR hardware mainstream and wearable daily.
The patent details a triple-pass optical system that uses half-mirror layers to avoid the need for long tubes or thick lenses. This design folds light three times inside the lens, delivering a wide view and sharp images in a thin frame. Canon's goal is to create AR/VR glasses that look like normal glasses, a significant shift from the bulky headsets currently available.
Canon is not alone in pursuing this form factor shift. Google was granted a patent for an optical system configuration that integrates AR/VR technology into a normal eyeglass frame. Canon's latest patent builds on this, aiming to make AR/VR eyewear more consumer-friendly and comparable to competitors like Apple's Vision Air and Zenni Optical.
