E-Fuels—synthetic fuels generated from hydrogen and carbon dioxide (CO2)—can be utilized as E-gasoline, E-diesel, or E-jet fuel, just like conventional fuels. Born from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), INERATEC has boasted a new production facility near Frankfurt Airport.

This plant targets annual production of 2,500 tons of E-Fuels and annual CO2 recycling of up to 8,000 tons. Initially, INERATEC's synthetic fuel will power aircraft and ships, with plans for heavy-duty transporters down the line. Approximately 40 million euros were invested in the ERA ONE plant.

A drop in the bucket: 2,500 tons versus 15,000 daily

Despite production increases, current E-Fuels output falls considerably short of meeting demand. Frankfurt Airport alone requires around 15,000 tons of kerosene daily, as indicated by its operator, Fraport. Grappling with the aviation industry's needs in the foreseeable future, strategic advisors stress the necessity for further technological advancements and substantial capacity expansion to maintain a sustainable aviation fuel supply.

CO2 from biogas, hydrogen from chlorine production

Partner Infraserv supplies the essential raw materials, CO2, and hydrogen, to INERATEC, which operates the plant in the Höchst Industrial Park. The CO2 origins from a biogas plant, whereas hydrogen comes as a byproduct of chlorine production.

INERATEC: Flexible tech that's easy to deploy anywhere

The new plant not only aims to produce E-Fuels but also serves as a model showcasing the technology's potential. Its modular design encourages easy growth and global deployment, with the capacity to churn out synthetic kerosene, gasoline, diesel, wax, methanol, or natural gas.

International endeavors - Chile, Italy, and beyond

INERATEC ventures beyond Germany, with projects in the works across Chile and Italy. The company boasts the support of numerous international investors, having successfully completed a funding round totaling over 100 million euros. Future mega-scale plants prioritize strategic locations rich in raw materials (such as near paper manufacturers, where suitable byproducts are available) and countries with reduced electricity costs.
