As the Berlin Regional Court made a ground-breaking decision in mid-March 2025, Google Ireland Ltd was ordered to be upfront with users about which of its 70+ services collect their data during registration. Following a complaint filed by the Federation of German Consumer Organizations (vzbv), the court's civil chamber found the "Express Personalization" and "Manual Personalization" options not meeting the legal requirements of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

But here's a twist, and don't forget to take notes: Google has proactively upped its ad transparency game by planning to display the genuine payment names for verified advertisers. The change will be particularly impactful when payment profiles differ from the verified advertiser names. This decision, not directly linked to the Berlin court ruling, will roll out in May 2025, giving online advertising a dose of transparency and accountability.

Remember, agencies miscategorized as direct advertisers have till the end of May 2025 to re-verify themselves as agencies to ensure accurate payer names are displayed. Plus, advertisers will soon get the option to manually edit their displayed payer names through their advertiser verification settings in June 2025. This is all part of Google's ongoing efforts to promote trust in the digital advertising landscape.

Meanwhile, Google is working on other sync harmonies to boost ad transparency. Take, for instance, the upcoming Performance Max campaigns with channel-level reporting and search terms visibility. These updates will give advertisers a better understanding of their budget distribution and usage. But keep in mind, these changes aren't specifically tied to the Berlin court ruling.
