In a comprehensive analysis by CoinGecko, the top performing crypto narratives of 2024 showcased a wide range of average returns, with some generating staggering gains and others experiencing declines.
Meme coins emerged as the second most profitable narrative, boasting an average price gain of 2185%. Previously, meme coins were identified as the top trend among traders, according to CoinGecko's predictions for 2024. However, it was AI that took the crown as the most profitable narrative, with an average price gain of an impressive 2940%.
Solana and Base were noted as especially prominent for their narrative momentum and trade volume in 2024, representing significant chain-specific focus areas. DeFi was the sixth most profitable crypto narrative with an average daily return of 101%, while L2 was the eighth least profitable with an average daily return of -21%.
L1 and DePIN had returns that slightly outperformed Bitcoin (+125.5%), with L1 being the fourth most profitable crypto narrative with an average daily return of 142%. RWA was the third most profitable crypto narrative with an average price gain of 820%.
Gaming was the seventh most profitable crypto narrative in 2024 with an average daily return of 14%. Meme coins had a return of 3211% until December 9, with most growth occurring in March, where the price soared from 97% to 1713%.
Interestingly, AI tokens surpassed meme coins as the most profitable crypto narrative due to a rally that boosted returns from 1598% to 2940% between December 9 and the end of 2024.
The figures represent the average daily returns of the ten largest tokens in each narrative, covering the period from January 1 or the first available price data to December 29, 2024.
Some community members have expressed doubts about the long-term popularity of AI agents, but the data from CoinGecko suggests that AI-related crypto projects are here to stay and continue to shape the broader market dynamics.
