Depop Announces Permanent CEO Appointment
Depop, the popular fashion resale platform, has announced a change in leadership. Peter Semple, who has served as interim CEO since May, has been appointed as the permanent CEO of Depop, effective this Friday.
Semple joined Depop in 2019, holding various senior marketing roles within the company. He served as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) from 2019 to 2021 and again from February 2023 to May 2025, and as Chief Brand Officer from 2021 to 2023.
Before joining Depop, Semple spent seven years at Google's Creative Lab and held account director positions at agencies VCCP and Anomaly, indicating a strong background in creative marketing and brand development.
Etsy's Chief Executive Officer, Josh Silverman, praised Depop's remarkable momentum in recent years. He stated, "As a leading resale platform, Depop has seen remarkable momentum, and we are thrilled to have Peter Semple at the helm to continue driving its growth."
Depop's gross merchandise sales have shown strong top-line growth, particularly in the U.S., and the company reported that its gross merchandise sales were "the highest it has been since the business was acquired in 2021."
The change in leadership at Depop comes after Kruti Patel Goyal, who was previously the CEO of Depop, left to become the president and chief growth officer of parent company Etsy Inc. This move aligns with Etsy's strategic leadership adjustments following its acquisition of Depop.
Semple demonstrated a proven ability to lead and inspire teams during his time as Interim Chief Executive Officer of Depop. His impact on Depop includes guiding brand and marketing strategies during a period of growth and transition, contributing to the company’s evolving identity within the fashion resale market.
Semple's deep familiarity with Depop's operations and brand likely supports a continuity and focus on purpose-driven storytelling combined with performance metrics, a theme noted in his leadership style.
In a company release sent to Retail Dive, Etsy reported Q1 revenue inched up 0.8% year over year to $651.2 million. However, Etsy's gross merchandise sales were down 6.5% in its most recent quarter. The net loss of $52 million from a net income of $63 million in the year-ago period was largely due to the sale of its Reverb Holdings division.
Lanny Baker was appointed as CFO at Etsy. Semple's dedication to the Depop mission and its community is evident, and he has shown a commitment to continuing Depop's growth and success under Etsy's leadership.
Peter Semple's background is primarily in marketing and brand leadership, with prior roles at top-tier digital and creative firms. His transition to CEO of Depop marks a continuation and deepening of his involvement in the company’s growth and brand evolution under Etsy's ownership.
