Estonia's E-Residency: A Boon to the National Economy

Digital residents of Estonia contribute significantly to the national economy in millions

Embrace the digital world with Estonia's E-Residency program, a game-changer in cross-border entrepreneurship! In the first half of 2024 alone, this innovative initiative directly contributed €31 million to Estonia's economy, with a staggering €11 million added in 2023 through local business services.

This groundbreaking program has proven its worth, as evidenced by the €22 million in labor taxes paid by companies founded by e-residents in the first half of the year. The remaining 24% came from income taxes on special cases, primarily dividends, totaling €7 million. Additional state fees paid by e-residents amounted to €2 million, enhancing the program's overall economic impact.

In the January to June period of 2024, over 6,000 foreign nationals were issued an e-resident digital ID, with an impressive 93% approval rate for applications. During this span, e-residents established 2,450 new Estonian companies, with Spanish, Ukrainian, and German citizens leading the charge.

Liina Vahtras, the managing director of e-residency, believes that while interest in Estonian companies remains high, growth is starting to level off. Despite this, the number of new applications was 7% higher compared to the same period last year, and the creation of new companies increased by an equally impressive 7%.

Estonian companies on the e-residency marketplace generated over €11.4 million in revenue last year from serving e-residents alone. This revenue is a testament to the sector's expansion thanks to the growing international client base provided by e-residents. In 2023, the direct economic revenue from the e-residency program amounted to €67.4 million.

Estonian e-resident status has been granted to 117,000 individuals from 185 nationalities, with 59,500 active e-resident digital ID cards currently in circulation. Since March 2022, citizens of Russia and Belarus have been ineligible to apply for Estonian e-residency. E-residents have founded or co-founded over 32,200 Estonian companies, representing about one in five new local companies each year. Furthermore, 38% of Estonian startups are linked to e-residents.

Estonia first introduced the world's first e-residency program in 2014, offering foreign nationals secure access to its public e-services, promoting cross-border entrepreneurship, and generating additional revenue for the national budget. Since its inception, the program has brought a total direct economic impact of €244 million to the Estonian state.
