In a surprising turn of events, the critically acclaimed puzzle-platformers, Limbo and Inside, developed by Playdead, are set to be removed from the GOG storefront on July 17th, 2025, at 3:00 PM CEST / 9:00 a.m. ET. The official reason for this removal remains undisclosed, but speculation points towards a legal dispute between Playdead's co-founders, Dino Patti and Arnt Jensen.

Limbo, launched in 2010, follows a young boy's harrowing journey through a strange forest filled with dark and eerie elements as he tries to find his missing sister. Inside, released in 2016, continues the narrative with another boy navigating a nightmarish testing facility. Both games are widely regarded as some of the best indie games ever made, with Limbo being a great puzzle game and Inside being considered phenomenal.

The legal dispute between Patti and Jensen stems from allegations of copyright infringement and damage to the studio's reputation. In March 2025, Patti posted about the creation of Limbo on LinkedIn, including artwork from the game, which led to accusations by Playdead's lawyers. Patti claims he was threatened with an IP lawsuit for using publicly available images, a move he believes was designed to erase his contributions to the game. The situation escalated with Playdead filing a lawsuit against Patti in June 2025.

Patti has expressed doubts that the delisting is directly due to the lawsuit. Instead, he suggests that the removal might be related to Playdead revising the game credits to remove his name, a practice they have followed on other platforms. The conflict between the co-founders dates back to disagreements over game rights, which led to Patti's departure from Playdead in 2016.

It's important to note that this legal dispute has not affected the continuation of Playdead's work on a third game. The game reportedly involves an astronaut on a strange planet covered in snow and ice. Meanwhile, Patti has moved on and formed a new studio, Jumpship, which launched the title Somerville in 2022.

For those who haven't played either game yet, it's recommended to grab them on your preferred platform to ensure continued access. If you own an Xbox Series X|S console, both Limbo and Inside are included in Xbox Game Pass. Unfortunately, neither Limbo nor Inside are currently discounted on GOG, with Limbo priced at $10 and Inside at $2 (currently on sale).
