Donkey Kong Country Returns HD's Launch and Ten Crucial Points to Familiarize Yourself With
Video games aren't like movies when it comes to remakes. Generally, they're met with approval, and that's the case with the upcoming Donkey Kong Country Returns HD.
The Nintendo classic is among the initial major releases of 2025. Here's a rundown of 10 important things to know about the enhanced version of DKCR:
Release Date: January 16, 2025
Hardcore followers of the original and those eagerly anticipating major Switch titles have likely been looking forward to the New Year with DKCR HD on the horizon. We're just a fortnight away now.
Platforms: Nintendo Switch
It's only available on the Switch. Rarely do you see a Mario, Link, or Donkey Kong game on a non-Nintendo platform, although there are a few exceptions.
Developer: Forever Entertainment
A new studio is taking charge of DKCR HD. The original was developed by Retro Studios. Donkey Kong is by far the biggest intellectual property that Forever Entertainment has handled. The biggest game FE has been involved with is probably the Panzer Dragoon: Remake, which came out about 30 years ago. Also, FE handled publishing duties for that title. It will be interesting to see how FE approaches the game.
Gameplay: The original, but stronger
Most consider this to be a remastered version of the original. For the uninitiated, the original is a side-scrolling game where players control Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. I wonder if any consideration has been given to changing Diddy's name, but I digress.
The gameplay is still based on running, jumping, conquering mine cart levels, rocket barrels, etc. Here's a peek at some gameplay.
Visual Enhancements: More Appealing.
Don't expect anything that makes you wonder if you've suddenly purchased a more powerful machine than the Switch.DKCR HD isn't going to be a massive visual upgrade, but the lighting will be improved, and some of the character models have been updated.
Additional Content: Extra Layers.
This version of DKCR HD includes all the levels from the original Wii and 3DS versions of the game. That addition could be enough of a draw for some fans.
Modes: More Difficulty Levels.
The Switch version will include the mode from the Wii that was considered more challenging, but it will also include the simpler 3DS version.
Co-op Play: It's Still Included.
Like the original, the remake will support two-player local co-op. One player can control Donkey Kong and the other can control Diddy Kong.
Pre-Order Bonuses: Not Much Here.
- In North America, GameStop offers a DK Barrel Pen Holder with pre-orders.
The highly anticipated 'Donkey Kong Country Returns HD' from Nintendo's stable is set to release on January 16, 2025, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. This remastered version by Forever Entertainment promises improved visuals and additional content, while maintaining the original side-scrolling gameplay.
