Dubai's Green Hydrogen Trial Accelerates Sustainable Transport

Dubai's ambitious green hydrogen trial, a cornerstone of the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, has made significant strides in the pursuit of a cleaner, more sustainable transport system. The trial, which involves the use of green hydrogen in RTA transport systems, has been in operation for four years since 2021.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has produced over 100 tonnes of green hydrogen during this period, harnessing solar energy at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This green hydrogen has been instrumental in powering hydrogen vehicles in Dubai, with over 11 tonnes supplied for vehicular and industrial use.

DEWA's green hydrogen project yields approximately 20 kg of hydrogen per hour, with storage enabling up to 12 hours of hydrogen supply. This clean energy source has generated more than 1.15 GWh of electricity and helped abate over 515 tonnes of CO2 emissions, demonstrating its role in decarbonizing transport and energy sectors.

The trial is particularly focused on utilizing green hydrogen for powering buses and marine transport. This could potentially enhance vehicle efficiency and serve as a key solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The trial underscores Dubai's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and aligns with broader UAE strategies, including the National Hydrogen Strategy, the UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategy, and Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050.

DEWA and Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) have collaborated on developing hydrogen fueling infrastructure. This collaboration includes conducting feasibility studies and pilot projects to support hydrogen mobility, leveraging DEWA's hydrogen production capacity and ENOC's expertise in the fuel market. Such infrastructure developments are crucial for scaling hydrogen use across various transport fleets, including buses, trucks, taxis, and private vehicles, as part of Dubai's transport sustainability ambitions.

The importance of green hydrogen in energy diversification and sustainability advancement was emphasized by Marwan bin Jassim Al Falasi, DEWA's Executive Vice President – Business Development and Excellence. He highlighted the potential of green hydrogen for powering various RTA transport modes, such as buses and marine transport.

Dubai's green hydrogen trial has moved from concept to operational reality, producing substantial quantities of green hydrogen, powering hydrogen vehicles, and developing supporting infrastructure. This advancement underscores Dubai's position as a regional leader in green hydrogen competitiveness, positioning it well for future hydrogen applications across energy, transport, and industrial sectors.
