Duynie Ingredients Tackles U.S. Food Waste with Plant-Based Pet Food
The United States wastes a significant portion of its food supply, with estimates suggesting 30-40% annually. Meanwhile, Duynie Ingredients is tackling this issue by creating plant-based pet food ingredients from co-products of the human food stream, contributing to a circular economy.
Duynie's innovative approach reduces waste and environmental impact. For instance, their potato co-product ingredient, PotaPure, saves substantial resources. One metric ton of PotaPure conserves 1.6 tons of carbon dioxide, 260 gallons of water, and 9,790 square feet of land compared to conventional potato ingredients.
However, the production process, particularly freeze-drying, presents challenges. It retains optimal nutrients but uses four to ten times more energy than conventional methods. To mitigate this, Duynie Ingredients has made its production process climate neutral by utilizing waste heat from a nearby biomass energy production facility. Equipment manufacturers are also focusing on innovations to reduce the environmental impact of refrigerant gases in freeze-drying machines.
Duynie Ingredients' work is part of a broader effort to reduce waste and environmental impact in the pet food industry. Other companies like Tyson Foods, Sonac, and Ridley Corporation are also developing innovations to reduce resource use and environmental impact in dry animal food ingredient production. By reducing food waste, we can decrease pollution, habitat loss, water use, and hunger, making Duynie's work a crucial step towards a more sustainable future.
