Electric Cooling Devices Unveiled for Distribution Transport by MTTE in 2025

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Transport Europe GmbH (MTTE) is making waves in the transport industry with its latest developments in electric transport refrigeration units (eTRUs). The company is presenting its expanded portfolio of fully electric eTRUs at this year's NUFAM in Karlsruhe, Germany.

The focus of MTTE's advancements lies in electric-driven units equipped with advanced heat-pump heating systems, designed specifically for domestic electric vehicles (EVs). These innovative systems operate solely on the vehicle's power supply, significantly reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption. This development directly supports zero-emission transport by eliminating the dependence on diesel-powered refrigeration in commercial trucks, a traditional source of emissions.

Key features of these eTRUs include high-efficiency operation, integration with domestic EV trucks, and the elimination of separate fossil-fuel generators or diesel engines traditionally used to power refrigeration units on trucks. The systems optimize energy consumption, minimizing the carbon footprint associated with refrigerated transport, especially in last-mile delivery where temperature control is critical.

In addition to MTTE's developments, similar advancements with electric motor-generators like Orbis Electric’s HaloDrive demonstrate the potential for up to 100% reduction in diesel refrigeration fuel consumption and emissions. HaloDrive systems convert truck braking energy into electricity to power mobile refrigeration units, further contributing to zero-emission transport refrigeration in commercial vehicles.

At NUFAM, MTTE is showcasing its expanded electric product portfolio, including the new fully electric underfloor refrigeration unit TEU for trucks, the trailer refrigeration unit TEF 1500, and the transporter unit TEK. The company's electrification strategy targets transport companies seeking emission-free solutions for refrigerated transport.

In the outdoor area of NUFAM, MTTE showcases its refrigeration technology in real vehicle applications. The equipment is designed for transport companies aiming to decarbonize their fleets while ensuring operational capability in urban areas. The showcased vehicles include a MAN load-through train with a TU diesel underfloor unit, a MAN truck with the new fully electric TEU machine, a van with the TEK electric unit, and an MTTE service vehicle.

MTTE's Managing Director Björn Reckhorn explains that the company's portfolio meets the demand for economical and environmentally friendly transport refrigeration solutions, actively supporting customers in the gradual decarbonization of their refrigerated vehicle fleets. The fully electric trailer refrigeration unit TEF 1500 is making its debut at the trade show, available with an external battery and configurable in different battery sizes.

The company is also increasing focus on electrification of all equipment classes in Europe, from transporters to trailers. MTTE is expanding its service network and product availability in Europe to cater to the growing demand for emission-free solutions in refrigerated transport. The goal is to enable locally emission-free refrigerated transport, especially in urban and regional distribution traffic.

By developing and showcasing these innovative electric transport refrigeration units, MTTE is leading the way towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transport industry.
