The past year has brought major changes to the region's police force as part of the criminal service reform. Areas like IT forensics, data security, and crime prevention are getting extra attention, with 34 out of 38 proposed centers already rolled out.
One of those centers is based in Wiener Neustadt, and a recent visit from Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker, and Provincial Police Director Franz Popp, showed off the excellent work these officers are doing.
Challenging New Duties: How Wiener Neustadt's Police Force is AdaptingAccording to Popp, the main goal is to move "specialized know-how to the regions." This new wave of improvements covers regions in crime scene work, IT forensics, data security, and crime prevention. Currently, there are two full-time staff members in Wiener Neustadt, reinforced by regional police part-timers. In the future, the center will double its team.
The center is also responsible for coordinating and preparing data for the entire region.
Cybercrime: A Modern Challenge Demanding ActionKarner believes the reform will boost efficiency for the police, allowing for faster, more targeted work. "Time-sensitive traces are secured earlier and professionally." Cybercrime is a significant concern, and on-site experts are essential for investigating these offenses, Karner explained. With its own server infrastructure, the Ministry of the Interior assures proper data management.
"Double Win": Securing Safety for Both Residents and Authorities
As Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker explained during his visit, this is a "win-win situation" for both residents and the security apparatus.

Mayor Klaus Schneeberger (ÖVP) welcomes any move enhancing security in Wiener Neustadt, noting it's especially important because the station with over 30,000 daily commuters is a popular crime hotspot.
The reform has faced internal police criticism, particularly about its personnel intensity. One pointed issue is the potential misplacement of heads in non-critical positions. But Karner firmly dismisses these concerns, citing recent years' massive personnel offensive with record recruitment numbers, meant to strengthen police personnel overall.
- The police force in Wiener Neustadt, under the criminal service reform, has been focusing more on IT forensics, data security, and cybercrime, as shown by the presence of a center dedicated to these areas and the increase in staff members specializing in these fields.
- The Interior Minister, Gerhard Karner, expressed concern over cybercrime and emphasized the importance of on-site experts for investigating these offenses, as proper management of data is crucial in preventing and addressing cyber threats.
