Kickin' it with the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i 14 (Gen 10) from CES

Last week, I got my grubby paws on Lenovo's revamped Yoga Book 9i, and let me tell you - it's been a wild ride! I've put this sucker through its paces, testing its gaming capabilities, all while ogling its sexy dual-screen setup. Here's what I found out, and trust me, it's a doozy!

After giving you the down-low on the design, display, and features in my initial impressions, I dove headfirst into PC gaming. I mean, who doesn't love watching pixels dance while wandering the digital wilderness, amirite?

Before we dive in, keep in mind Lenovo didn't design the Yoga Book 9i for serious gaming sessions. Instead, it caters to a more relaxed user experience than the gotta-have-it ASUS Zenbook Duo. Both machines offer similar horsepower and displays, but the Zenbook takes a bigger slice of the pie for busy professionals who need to multitask like bosses.

The Yoga Book's groovy soundbar hinge, slick design, and dual OLED screens make for an awesome multimedia experience, perfect for movie marathons, sweet tunes, and, yes, even a spot of gaming on the side.

But can this twin-screened wonder handle dual-screen gaming? You bet your sweet bippy I wanted to find out!

Stalkin' the Yoga Book 9i's 'Arrow Lake' integrated graphics

It's no secret that the Yoga Book 9i ain't built for gaming, but the laptop's integrated Intel Arc 140T graphics chip got me curious. This bad boy uses the Intel Xe+ architecture with 8 cores, a max 2.25GHz frequency, and even has ray tracing support. Yes, you read that right, ray tracing!

Now, my colleague Zachary Boddy already put this chip through its paces in our Core Ultra 9 285H CPU review, and he concluded it "competes with the best gaming handhelds." But keep in mind, those tests went down on a beast of a machine with a kickass cooling system. The Yoga Book 9i, on the other hand, doesn't exactly scream "I'm a ventilation freak."

What's gaming like on a dual-screen laptop?

Honestly, I wasn't worried a lick about whether the laptop could run my fave lightweight games. I was much more interested in seeing what I could squeeze out of these titles in dual-screen mode. I thought splitting games across both screens would be a game-changer, especially since this laptop is designed for easy touch and pen control.

But hold on tight, cowboy! There were a few unexpected twists.

As it turns out, there's no NVIDIA "Surround" or AMD "Eyefinity" monitor tools to combine multiple screens into one and create a super display. Bummer city, right? Not a problem; I went old school and dragging game windows across the screens and hoped for the best.

I started with Balatro, a game that wouldn't miss a beat with the gap between the screens. I spent a good hour partying like it was 1999, building hands and collecting Jokers with the active pen.

Next up, I gave Rimworld and Vampire Survivors a shot. Both games look fantastic when stretched across the screens, but the huge screen split just didn't work out. Rimworld edged out as kinda suitable, but Vampire Survivors was an outright no-go.

So, I parked the Yoga Book 9i on its stand, keeping the primary game screen and a podcast on the secondary screen for a dual-screen gaming sesh-style experience. As a gamer with two screens on the go when I'm gaming on my desktop PC, I felt right at home on this laptop!

Speaking of battery life, I drained about 10% after 30 minutes of light gaming. Not bad, considering the laptop was working hard with both screens and the CPU/GPU under pressure. This works out to approximately five hours of gaming on battery if you do the math.

How hot does the Yoga Book 9i get when gaming?

The Yoga Book 9i stayed cool during my testing, with heat only becoming an issue when the laptop was plugged in. I'll be diving deeper into this in my full review, but for now, just know that the PC gets toasty with extra battery charging.

I couldn't hear the fan over the game audio while playing, so it's safe to say the Yoga Book 9i keeps it down when you're blasting virtual aliens.

Can the Yoga Book 9i handle demanding games?

The integrated Intel Arc 140T graphics chip handles light titles like a boss, but that's not exactly news. I gave the performance a whirl with Forza Horizon 5, and it ran smoothly at FHD+ resolution despite a High preset and medium ray tracing. The OLED display makes this game look all kinds of awesome, too!

I even tweaked the settings to boost frame rates, but I didn't notice a significant difference in visuals. The displays have a 120Hz refresh rate, so there's plenty of room to boost the frame rates.

Fans run louder during games like Forza but never scream. And for those days when the laptop doesn't feel like enough, streaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce Now are there to pick up the slack. Stay tuned for the full review, where I'll put the Yoga Book 9i through its paces to see just how it stacks up.
