2023's Video Game Crown Goes to... Lies of P: Overture

Embrace the difficulty and dive into a dark, thrilling journey!

In the world of video games, 2023 was nothing short of a triumph. Heavyweights like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Resident Evil 4 remake, Baldur's Gate 3, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 fought tooth and nail for the title of Game of the Year. Though these titans held their ground, the game that truly won my heart was none other than Lies of P. And after all this time, I stand by that.

Lies of P: Overture, the recently-released DLC expansion for this action-Soulslike masterpiece, takes the already-beloved formula and kicks it up a notch. If you're a Souls fan craving something new, Overture is precisely what you've been yearning for. But be warned, it's not for the faint of heart.

This expansion ramps up everything you love about the game: fast-paced combat, meaty lore, and gruesome body horror. And with a fresh suite of weapons, challenging bosses, and new locations that see the body-horror ramped up to new grotesque levels, there's plenty to keep you entertained.

Reliving the Horror

Return to the nightmare city of Krat once more, but this time, venture into its past before the events of the base game. While some areas might feel less visually striking than others, Overture opens with the masterful Krat Zoo—undeniably one of the most terrifying and memorable levels in the entire game. Think twisted kangaroos and colossal crocodiles, and you're on the right track.

The temple, factory, and mine found further in the DLC may not match the initial spectacle, but the final two chapters offer fresh, visually captivating landscapes that'll leave you on the edge of your seat. Overall, Overture starts strong and ends stronger—with a slightly less thrilling middle act.

Up the Difficulty

Lies of P: Overture goes above and beyond to deliver an exceedingly challenging experience. Though it's a Soulslike game by design, the developers have crafted an expansion that truly tests your skills. Boss fights are as intense and rewarding as ever, with the final battle standing tall against Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree. Standard enemies, however, present a new challenge, striking with the force of a turboboosted monster truck.

Actionable Advice

If you're in for the long haul and ready to face adversity, take advantage of the new difficulty options added to the base game with the DLC's launch. There are now three options to choose from: Butterfly's Guidance (Very Easy), Awakened Puppet (Easy), and the infamous Legendary Stalker (Standard), which represent how the base game was before the options were added.[2][3]

Newcomers who have trouble adapting to the increased difficulty can start on either the Easy or Very Easy modes, but even on the simplest settings, Lies of P: Overture remains a challenge for veterans. Whether you're a seasoned Souls player or a beginner, you'll need skill and perseverance to overcome its obstacles.

Overall, Lies of P: Overture offers a dark, thrilling journey that'll have you enthralled from start to finish. Though the difficulty may test your limits, experiencing the game’s rich world and absorbing its intricate lore is more than worth the challenge. So, are you ready to step back into Krat?
