EPA Releases GIS Shapefiles for NAAQS Nonattainment Areas
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed GIS shapefiles for National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) nonattainment areas since 2004. These files, available at Table 1, provide boundary information for mapping and visualization purposes. Legal definitions can be found at 40 CFR part 81.
The shapefiles, created using ESRI's GIS mapping software, include multiple files such as shapefile.dbf, shapefile.prj, and shapefile.shp. They can be used by geospatial mapping applications supporting the ESRI shapefile format. Each NAAQS area has two download files: Shapefile and External Data File.
The External Data File contains nonattainment/maintenance status and classification. It's a compressed file with external information in dbf, xls formats, and a descriptive text file. It can be linked to the shapefile using the composID field. While these files are useful for mapping and visualization, they may not represent the exact legal definitions of nonattainment areas.
The EPA's shapefiles for NAAQS nonattainment areas, available since 2004, are a valuable resource for geospatial mapping. They provide boundary information and can be linked with external data for further analysis. However, they should be used for mapping and visualization purposes only and may not represent the exact legal definitions.
