EU Boosts EV Charging Infrastructure: New Directive Mandates Charging Points in Non-Residential Buildings

The European Union has implemented a new directive, effective from 1 January 2025, that aims to boost electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Non-residential buildings with over 20 parking spaces must now comply with specific regulations regarding EV charging points.

By 1 January 2025, these buildings must have at least one charging point installed. Looking ahead, by January 2027, one in ten parking spaces must be equipped with charging infrastructure, and 50% of all spaces must have preparatory infrastructure for future charging installations. This directive also applies to new commercial buildings with at least ten parking spaces, which must have at least one EV charge point and infrastructure for one in five spaces ready to support future charging point installations.
