EU-residing Romanian citizens can acquire electronic identity documents
Ready to hit the EU roads with ease? Romanian e-ID cards now act as travel documents for citizens abroad!
Break out the maps and pack your bags, fellow EU travelers! The Romanian government has taken a giant leap to further simplify your travels within the European Union. As of March 27, Romanian citizens living in any EU member state can now apply for electronic identity cards that double as nifty travel documents.
Government spokesman Mihai Constantin shares the exciting news, stating that this move secures the right to free movement and residence within the EU. He explains that for those who can prove their primary residency is outside of Romania, details regarding their home address will not appear on the e-ID card.
To play along, you'll need an account on the Hub platform—the service and info portal of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Except for minors, of course! The process for setting up and verifying these accounts will be detailed in an order to be issued by the Minister of Internal Affairs within 90 days from the Emergency Ordinance adoption.
First unveiled on March 20 in Cluj County, these sleek new e-IDs conform to European norms and boast advanced security measures like fingerprint scanning, chip technology, and digital signatures. The printed card displays the usual suspects (name, citizenship, birth date, sex, face snap, CNP, and signature), while the electronic version stashes extra goodies, such as your parents' names, current address, two fingerprint impressions, and digital certificates for authentication or electronic signatures.
Now, hold on to your hats, cause this EU party's just getting started! Thanks to the EU's promotion of the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI), these nifty cards will only make your digital identity verification across the EU a breeze. See ya later, cumbersome papers!
