Europe encounters internet disruptions in 2025, with system evaluations carried out
Global Cloud and ISP Outages Increase in August, According to Cisco ThousandEyes
In a recent report by Cisco ThousandEyes, the number of cloud provider outages and ISP outages increased significantly in August 2025.
For the week of August 18-24, there was a six percent increase in global outages, with a total of 260 incidents compared to the previous week. This trend continued for the following week, with 246 outages reported for August 25th to 31st.
In the EMEA region, the number of outages saw a significant rise, with a 45% decrease in the number of outages one week, and a 40% increase the next. The number of cloud provider outages also increased by 14% to 8 incidents.
However, it's worth noting that the total number of ISP outages decreased by 8% compared to the previous week, with 145 incidents reported.
Some of the notable outages in August included an incident at GTT Communications on August 28, affecting some partners and customers in multiple regions. On August 14, Italian internet service provider Sparkle experienced an outage affecting customers in several regions.
Microsoft also experienced a network outage on August 21, affecting some downstream partners and access to services in Microsoft environments in multiple regions. On August 9, there was an outage at NTT Communications, a global telecommunications company, affecting some of its customers in multiple regions.
In the EMEA region, there were also outages at Level 3 Communications on August 7, Microbase on July 31, and Equinix on August 18. Hurricane Electric also experienced a network outage on August 27.
One of the longest outages was at Microbase, lasting a total of 53 minutes and spanning a period of one hour and 40 minutes. The outage at Emirates Telecommunications Corporation lasted a total of 45 minutes, but the issues spanned a period of three hours and ten minutes.
In contrast, Cisco ThousandEyes reported zero outages worldwide and in the EMEA region for the segment of collaboration app networks. The company monitors internet and cloud traffic and provides weekly updates on ISP, cloud service, and UCaaS provider performance.
Despite the increase in outages, there were no reports of companies in the EMEA region intentionally shutting down their networks during the week of September 8-14. In early September, only Verizon in the US experienced a major network outage, but no similar widespread outages occurred in EMEA.
The report serves as a reminder for businesses to have contingency plans in place to minimize the impact of such outages on their operations. As the reliance on cloud services and the internet continues to grow, so too does the importance of maintaining a reliable and secure infrastructure.
