Experienced professional in hydrogen power cells transitions to Blue World Technologies
Morten Hougaard Sørensen, an industry veteran with a strong background in High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane (HT PEM) fuel cell technology, has joined Blue World Technologies. Sørensen, who has been dedicated to transferring complex technology products to the market since 2012, will take on the role of Chief Business Development Officer at the company.
Blue World Technologies, a Danish firm specialising in HT PEM fuel cell technology, is looking forward to increasing its focus on bringing products to the market. With Sørensen's appointment, the company is strengthening its commercial focus and aiming to bring their front-running HT PEM fuel cell technology to market at scale.
Sørensen has managed a Danish branch of a fuel cell technology company and has extensive experience in the field. He is excited to be part of the team that brings Blue World's products to the next level.
Advantages of Blue World Technologies' HT PEM Fuel Cell Technology
Sørensen highlights several advantages of Blue World Technologies' HT PEM fuel cell technology. One of the key advantages is its higher operating temperature (~160-200°C) compared to standard low-temperature PEM fuel cells. This allows better tolerance to impurities in hydrogen fuel and facilitates easier heat management.
Another advantage is improved CO tolerance, meaning the fuel cells can use reformate or less pure hydrogen without significant performance loss. Enhanced thermal and water management capabilities due to operating conditions also enable more flexible system integration and potential for combined heat and power (CHP) applications.
Moreover, the technology may offer potential long-term cost advantages because of its materials and operating regime, as it uses less critical raw materials compared to other fuel cell types.
Disadvantages of HT PEM Fuel Cells
However, the technology also has disadvantages. The higher temperature requires components and membranes that can withstand harsher conditions, which can increase material costs and complexity initially. Durability and long-term stability at elevated temperature conditions remain technical challenges needing further research and development.
Compared to some other fuel cells, HT PEM systems may have somewhat lower power density or efficiency at certain operating points, which can affect system size and cost.
A Valuable Addition to Blue World Technologies
Anders Korsgaard, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at Blue World Technologies, welcomes Sørensen's appointment. "Morten's strong industry knowledge and experience in HT PEM technology will be a valuable addition to our team as we continue our journey towards realising the potential of this technology," Korsgaard said.
Sørensen holds a master's degree in engineering from Aalborg University and has been driving the effort to commercialize fuel cell technology as Managing Director at Advent Technologies A/S, the Danish branch of Advent Technologies. He believes that customers choose Blue World's products because it provides reliable power, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and improves local air quality.
