Experiencing history through virtual reality: A voyage to the past at Louvre Abu Dhabi's VR event

The Louvre Abu Dhabi has launched an exciting new virtual reality (VR) experience titled "A Journey Through History." This 25-minute immersive VR journey, located in the museum's lower gallery, invites up to ten participants to embark on a collective and interactive adventure through major historical events and cultural milestones that shaped human civilization.

The VR experience is designed to be accessible to a wide range of audiences, including families, students, technology enthusiasts, and culture explorers. It is suitable for visitors aged eight and above and is available in Arabic, English, and French.

The journey takes participants on a thrilling time-travel mission through art and history, starting in Imperial Rome, moving on to Medieval Baghdad, and concluding in Mughal India. Along the way, visitors will encounter notable artifacts such as a portrait of Emperor Augustus, a manuscript page from De Materia Medica, and the Four Mirrors Shield.

The VR experience is inspired by science fiction and features cinematic storytelling, developed in collaboration with Small Creative Studio (France). The project is an extension of Louvre Abu Dhabi's mission to highlight shared connections between cultures and societies.

The experience uses advanced wireless, full-body motion tracking technology, allowing participants to actively explore historical landscapes through body movements. This fosters interaction and collective discovery, creating a unique and engaging way to immerse oneself in history.

Moreover, the VR journey includes rediscovering masterpieces from Louvre Abu Dhabi's collection. One such scene is a tranquil water scene alongside the Jal Mahal palace, immersing visitors in the grandeur of the Mughal Empire.

Marine Botton, Senior Interpretation and Creative Content Specialist at Louvre Abu Dhabi, emphasizes the VR experience's role in engaging visitors as active participants in history. "A Journey Through History" is part of a series of inspiring cultural initiatives at Louvre Abu Dhabi that welcome all, building bridges of connection and dialogue between cultures across time, and reviving human stories.

The VR experience is a testament to Louvre Abu Dhabi's dedication to blending art, culture, and innovation, transforming historical engagement through collective VR experiences, as part of their broader Quantum Dome initiative. This 12-month VR experience offers an immersive, interactive, and communal way to explore the rich tapestry of human civilizations, making history come alive for visitors.
