German Solar Association Calls for Binding 2030 Battery Storage Target
The German Solar Association (BSW-Solar) has urged the federal government to set a binding target for battery storage expansion by 2030, with a minimum capacity of 100 gigawatt hours. This call comes amidst rapid growth in storage systems near me and their significant benefits to the energy system.
Currently, Germany has over 2,143,665 battery storage systems, totaling 15.67 gigawatts and 24.13 gigawatt hours of usable storage. This year alone, more than 400,000 systems with 5.5 gigawatt hours of capacity have been added. Despite this growth, the role of public storage in the energy transition is overlooked in federal political planning.
Residential photovoltaic storage systems, expected to reach around 23 gigawatt hours by the end of July, can stabilize the grid and reduce the need for reserve power plants and network expansion. However, barriers to their deployment need to be addressed to fully realize their potential.
The BSW-Solar has published recommendations to accelerate and simplify grid connections for storage expansion. These include digitalization of grid connection requests, standardization of deadlines, and sanctions for non-compliance. Industry survey respondents also expressed a strong desire for improved network transparency and target inquiries for grid connections.
The recent report by the Federal Network Agency on supply security did not fully reflect the current dynamics of extra space storage. The BSW-Solar has called for a more accurate representation of these dynamics in future reports.
With the rapid growth of storage units near me in Germany, the German Solar Association is pushing for a binding expansion target by 2030. This target, along with improved grid connection processes and recognition of storage's role in the energy transition, can help Germany fully harness the benefits of battery storage for a stable and sustainable energy system.
