Germany Bolsters Defence Ties with India, Herrenknecht Diversifies Production
Germany is bolstering its defence ties with India, aiming to expedite equipment clearances and make progress on the P75(I) submarine project. This move comes as part of an overall strengthening of bilateral relations, with planned visits by high-ranking German officials.
The deepening defence cooperation is driven by shared interests and recent challenges. Chinese customs have blocked Herrenknecht machines destined for India, causing delays in crucial infrastructure projects. This includes major projects like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train and the Delhi-Meerut rapid rail corridor. The disruptions led New Delhi to engage with both Berlin and Beijing to resolve the issue.
In response to these challenges, German tunnel-boring machine manufacturer Herrenknecht has decided to diversify its production. The company will establish new facilities in Pune, Maharashtra, to minimise further disruption from Chinese customs. This shift is part of Germany's broader strategy to diversify supply chains and reduce dependencies, particularly in the face of economic and security concerns.
Germany's pursuit of deeper defence ties with India, coupled with Herrenknecht's manufacturing shift, reflects a mutual effort to strengthen cooperation and mitigate risks. These moves aim to ensure smoother project execution and enhance bilateral relations, with planned visits by Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul further cementing this commitment.
