Germany Boosts Drone Defense: Minister Urges Law, Berlin Bolsters Police Gear
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has urged for a legal framework to facilitate military aid in drone defense, following multiple disruptions in European airspace. The Berlin Senate is also bolstering police equipment for this purpose, with support from Innensenatorin Iris Spranger.
Dobrindt's proposal comes amidst growing concerns about unauthorized drone flights. The interior administration has identified five key systems for drone defense: interception drones, radar systems, detection devices, kinetic defense systems, and rapid localization drones for illegal operators. Berlin has already allocated funds for drone defense, including 1.7 million euros over the next two years and 3 million euros for the 2024 European Football Championship. During the EM, the police conducted 12 defense operations, with a total of 51 in 2024 and 14 so far this year. Green interior expert Vasili Franco supports enhancing drone defense for the Berlin police, focusing on monitoring rather than shooting down drones. The comprehensive reform of the Berlin Police Act includes plans for regulations to detect and neutralize unknown flying objects in emergencies.
With increasing drone-related incidents, both federal and local authorities are taking steps to strengthen drone defense. The proposed legal framework, enhanced equipment, and regulatory reforms aim to ensure public safety and maintain order in the skies.
