Germany's September 2025 Car Sales: Tesla Slips, EVs Surge
September 2025 saw mixed fortunes for automakers in Germany. Tesla faced a decline in new vehicle registrations, while Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Opel enjoyed double-digit growth. Electric vehicles (EVs) surged, with nearly one in five new cars being electric.
Tesla's new vehicle registrations dropped by 9.4% compared to September 2024. Meanwhile, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Opel saw registrations increase by double digits. The overall market grew by 12.8%.
SUVs remained popular, accounting for one third of new registrations. The EV market boomed, with registrations up 32% and making up nearly 20% of new cars. Around 45,500 EVs were registered, a significant increase.
Chinese automaker BYD had a record month, with registrations soaring by 2,225% to 3,255 units. Since the start of 2025, around 2.11 million passenger cars have been newly registered, a slight decrease of 0.3% compared to the same period last year.
In September 2025, the German car market showed varied performance. While Tesla struggled, traditional German automakers thrived. The shift towards EVs continued, with BYD's record month highlighting the growing influence of Chinese competitors.
