Gisele Bündchen Warns of Deepfake Scam on Instagram
Brazilian supermodel Gisele B√ľndchen recently alerted her followers to a scam using her manipulated image and voice on Instagram. The fraud involved fake videos, targeting unsuspecting users with deceptive ads. In August, B√ľndchen warned her followers about the scam, which used manipulated content to promote non-existent products. The group behind this operation, known as 'Modo Selva', allegedly defrauded over 20 million Reais (3.2 million Euros) using deepfakes. The scam involved creating fake videos of B√ľndchen and other celebrities to lure victims into buying products via Instagram ads. Most victims lost small amounts, usually less than 100 Reais (16 Euros), and rarely reported the crimes. However, one victim's complaint of a 44.57 Reais (7.12 Euros) scam involving a manipulated video of B√ľndchen led to the investigations by Brazil's Federal Police. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, prohibits ads that fraudulently use public figures to deceive people. They have systems in place to detect celebrity impersonations. Brazil's Supreme Court also ruled in June that social media platforms can be held responsible for illegal content from their users without a prior court order. Brazil is cracking down on the use of AI tools to manipulate images and videos of celebrities for online fraud. The investigations against such scams are ongoing, with the Federal Police of Brazil leading the efforts. Users are advised to be cautious of any suspicious ads or content online, especially those involving manipulated celebrity images or voices.
