Global Internet Services Provided by Starlink and Elon Musk Have Experience a Global Outage.
The global Starlink satellite internet service experienced a significant outage on August 18, 2025, disrupting connectivity for thousands of users worldwide. Reports of the outage emerged from various countries, including the United States, Kazakhstan, Canada, the UK, Germany, Mexico, and others.
Evidence of these widespread outages was found on the Downdetector website, according to reports from Oxu.Az and Liter.kz. The website, which tracks outages and disruptions of popular internet resources, initially detected the issues around 21:20 Kazakhstan time on August 18.
Users reported a complete loss of network with Starlink, with complaints focusing primarily on the quality of the internet service. The exact cause of the outage was initially unclear, but it is part of broader operational challenges including network congestion and technical issues.
SpaceX, the company behind Starlink, has not provided a detailed public explanation for the August 18 outage. However, previous related incidents have been linked to capacity limits, satellite and ground station availability, and network congestion. In response to such outages, SpaceX has been actively launching new Starlink satellites to expand capacity and reduce congestion, aiming to enhance service stability worldwide.
In a recent launch in late July 2025, SpaceX deployed 28 satellites to help address these challenges. However, the company has not yet provided specific details on the August 18 outage or its direct response measures beyond ongoing satellite deployments.
Despite the challenges, SpaceX remains committed to improving the Starlink network's robustness. The company's goal is to provide reliable and high-speed internet to remote and underserved areas, making it a crucial service for many users around the world.
