Google Offers Free Year of Advanced AI Tools to African Students

Google is empowering African students with a year of free access to its advanced AI tools. The tech giant announced that university students from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe can enjoy a 12-month premium subscription to Google AI Pro, powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro, at no cost. Alex Okosi, Google's Managing Director in Sub-Saharan Africa, made the announcement, highlighting the company's commitment to Africa's digital growth.

The premium subscription, typically priced at ₦28,500 ($19.39) monthly, offers a wealth of features. Students can delve into in-depth research, summarise academic papers, generate reports, and debug code with ease. The subscription also provides unlimited access to Google's advanced AI tools, fostering creativity and learning. Additionally, students will gain access to tools like NotebookLM, Veo3, and a generous 2 TB of cloud storage across other Google products.

To qualify, students must have a Google account and verify their student status by uploading required documents. Google has partnered with SheerID to review the submitted documents, with a review process expected to take just a few minutes. The offer is available from October 7 to December 9, 2025, and students must also add a form of payment on the website, with no charges applied.

Google's latest initiative builds on its long-running investment in Africa's digital ecosystem, including Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and Digital Skills for Africa. By offering free access to Google AI Pro, the company aims to build foundational AI skills in students, equipping them for a workforce increasingly defined by AI demand. This generous offer underscores Google's commitment to supporting Africa's digital future.
