Google prioritizes reputable news sources in search results
In a significant move towards enhancing user experience, Google has launched the Preferred Sources feature for its Search engine. This new tool allows users to select trusted news outlets that they want to see more prominently in the Top Stories section of Google Search.
To use the Preferred Sources feature, users simply need to search for a current news topic that triggers the Top Stories section, click the star or sources icon next to the Top Stories header, select their preferred outlets from a searchable list, and refresh the page to see an updated Top Stories feed featuring their choices. Users can add multiple preferred sources and update selections anytime.
The rollout of the Preferred Sources feature began on August 12–13, 2025, and is currently available only in English in the United States and India. Although there is no official timeline yet for a global rollout, industry observers expect it will gradually expand to more regions in the future as Google refines the feature.
Google assures that users will still see results from other websites, but the new feature provides a way to customize Search. This means that users can now tailor their Google Search experience to see websites they trust the most towards the top.
The Preferred Sources feature incorporates automatic quality filtering, so smaller or less frequently updated sources may not be available for selection. It also benefits publishers by providing tools to encourage readers to add them as preferred sources, such as deep links on social media or buttons on their websites.
This new feature represents a significant shift towards more personalized and trusted news consumption on Google Search. Users can now control the sources they see in their Google Search results, improving the quality of search results and providing a more tailored news experience.
Google Search remains one of the most used tools for finding anything on the internet. With the introduction of the Preferred Sources feature, users can now enjoy a more personalized and trusted news experience on Google Search.
