Google's Gemini software now enables Google Docs to be verbally narrated with its latest 'Audio' text-to-speech feature.
In an exciting development, Google Docs has introduced a new audio feature that allows users to convert their documents into audio files. This feature is currently available in English and is rolling out to eligible Google Workspace users, including Business Standard and Enterprise accounts, with plans to extend availability to Android soon.
To access and use the new audio feature, open your document in a web browser and navigate to the Tools menu, where you will find a new Audio option located between Voice Typing and Gemini. Selecting Listen to this tab opens a floating audio player with play, pause, and scrubber controls, along with adjustable playback speed.
For added convenience, editors can insert an Audio Button directly into their documents via Insert → Audio Buttons → Listen to Tab. These buttons are customizable in label, color, and size, making it easy to tailor the listening experience to your preferences.
The available voice options for this feature offer various natural-sounding voices designed to suit different tones and purposes. The voice types include Narrator, Educator, Teacher, Persuader, Explainer, Coach, and Motivator. These options allow you to personalize the listening experience according to your preference or the intended style of delivery.
This feature is intended to improve accessibility, aid in content review by hearing errors that might be missed visually, and enhance engagement by offering an alternative way to consume written content.
